I'd gone to visit a friend of mine living alone in Miami, and was shocked to see he still had some really old furniture, dating back to our time in college. I am not too sensitive about home decoration and the idea of hiring an interior designer to come and splash ideas around my place sounds alien, but I think I try to keep some standards in this field. Just as you do not wear scruffy or stale clothes to work for fear of being rejected by your colleagues or putting clients off, you do not use furniture endlessly accumulating dust, stains and feline fur. It isn't comfy, it looks bad and it doesn't make you look house-proud.
Imagine a Friday evening where you meet a fun girl who you have a great time dancing with. She's a lot of fun to hang out with and she seems to like you as well. You sip some wine, chat a little more, go back to the dance floor to strut your stuff. From there, both of you are interested in taking things further and your apartment seems to be the closest from your current location. Plus, she does not want to disturb her flat mates too much and since you have your own place, it would be nice to see the view from the living room and so one and so forth.
Would you be prepared to make yourself look like a fool in front of this great girl thanks to your old and raggedy sofa? Are you OK about this table with a rather tasteless design from the early 2000s, complete with a set of equally uninspiring chairs? How about the mess strewn all over your apartment in the form of books, utensils, CDs and clothes because you don't have adequate storage? And what in heaven's name is she going to think when she sees a bike in your living room?
So there I was at my friend's place which needed some solid dose of
Miami furniture stores to start looking remotely livable. I munched my thoughts once or twice before I decided to raise the issue with the poor guy and he certainly was not amused when I finally brought myself to do it. Pretty soon we were talking about how most men don't really feel the need to keep their apartments updated, decorated and maintained like women do. Unfortunately, what we both came to agree upon was that bachelors are satisfied living just about anywhere- dens, caves, mud shelters, anything! The reason behind this is that most men are still probably living out their teenage days and the lack of a family structure gives way to an organized way of life. It goes without saying that things change very drastically when a man is involved in a serious relationship, especially if he gets married. The woman in your life will slowly, or rapidly, take over these responsibilities and very soon you'll have to say goodbye to the caveman approach to life you had going.
